Basic Information

The Wharton Borough Police Department patrols the Borough of Wharton and the Township of Mine Hill. We currently employ 22 police officers and provide service to approximately 10,000 residents in a five-mile area of responsibility. Our area of responsibility covers sections of Interstate 80, State Highways 15 and 46.

Written Exam

A Police Officers Entry Level Witten Examination will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 9am at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy, 500 West Hanover Avenue, Morristown NJ 07960. Applicants should arrive at 8:15am for check in. Applicants must bring a valid government issued photo identification and #2 pencils for the exam. The exam is approximately 2.5 hours in length. The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police will be administering the written exam.

Eligibility

  • Between the ages of 21 and 34.
  • Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
  • Be a high school graduate or possess a general equivalency degree.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen and resident of New Jersey.
  • Ability to perform all of the duties and tasks of a police officer.
  • No criminal history and of good moral character.

Applicants who score in the top 50% on the written examination will be eligible for the Physical test.

Physical Test Requirements 

The test will include:

Minimum standards in each testing area

  • 1 1/2 Mile Run     -  14:40     
  • Vertical Jump            - 16 inches
  • Push Ups   -  34 in one minute
  • Sit Ups               -  38 in one minute
  • 300 Meter Sprint  64.3 seconds
  • Bench Press   - 84% of your body weight for one repetition

 

The Physical Exam will take place on April 30, 2022 between 8am – 12pm. Applicants will be divided into groups and will be notified of their start time the week of test. The Physical Exam will be hosted at Gifford Field at Morris Hill High School, 520 West Main Street, Rockaway, NJ 07866. Gifford Field is located in the rear of the school. Park in front of the Dr. James McNasby Technology Center and walk up to the field. Applicants should wear athletic clothing and running shoes for the exam.

Applicants who score in the top 50% of the physical test will move on to an interview with the Wharton Police Department Supervisory Panel.

The top five interviews will move on to an interview with the Chief of Police.

If selected, the applicant must successfully pass the following

  • Background investigation
  • Medical examination
  • Psychological screening
  • Drug testing
  • Academy training (Unless already PTC certified or waiver eligible)
