Course Description

This intensive eight-hour program offers comprehensive instruction tailored for K-9 handlers—both new and experienced—as well as supervisors, trainers, and agency administrators who are evaluating or currently operating canine units. Using video case studies, classroom-based scenarios, and group discussions, participants will acquire current information frequently mandated by accreditation standards. Dogs may accompany handlers to the course, with scheduled rest periods provided for their comfort. The program addresses critical areas including administrative leadership, legal exposure and risk management, canine training methodologies, community engagement and media relations, and current legal frameworks affecting K-9 operations and use-of-force decisions.

Course Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

• Assess whether a K-9 program aligns with community needs and recognize the core functions and value of such units
• Apply K-9 program leadership standards, address liability and legal issues, coordinate inter-agency support, and apply relevant case law including Graham v. Connor
• Implement sound training methods, appropriate deployment procedures, certification protocols, and scenario-based in-service training
• Integrate K-9 units effectively into community relations initiatives, coordinate with media outlets, and maintain a positive social media strategy
• Plan financial aspects, manage K-9 health and operational maintenance, and anticipate future growth or modification of program resources
