Course Overview
This in-depth training program serves new and experienced K-9 handlers, supervisors, trainers, and organizational leaders who are evaluating or currently operating K-9 programs. Utilizing video analysis, classroom simulations, and collaborative group discussions, attendees will receive critical updates frequently mandated by accreditation standards. While officers are welcome to attend without their canines, the program includes scheduled breaks to accommodate dogs if brought. The course addresses key areas including leadership, liability exposure, training methodologies, media relations, and contemporary legal issues affecting K-9 operations and deployment decisions.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Assess whether establishing a K-9 unit aligns with community needs and identify the core mission of K-9 programs
- Apply K-9 unit management principles, identify and mitigate liability risks, navigate mutual assistance frameworks, and apply relevant case law including Graham v. Connor
- Implement evidence-based training methods, execute proper deployment procedures, meet certification standards, and conduct scenario-based continuing education
- Integrate K-9 programs into community engagement efforts, coordinate with media outlets, and maintain appropriate social media communication
- Plan program finances, establish protocols for animal welfare and upkeep, and evaluate options for program growth and advancement
