Course Overview
This in-depth training program serves new and experienced K-9 handlers, supervisors, trainers, and organizational leaders who are evaluating or operating canine programs. Participants will engage with real-world scenarios through video analysis, classroom-based case studies, and interactive group discussions to acquire critical knowledge frequently mandated by law enforcement accreditation standards. Though officers may attend without their canine partners, the program provides accommodations and scheduled breaks for dogs in attendance. Topics span administrative oversight, legal exposure, handler development, media relations, and contemporary legal requirements governing canine operations and deployment decisions.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Assess whether a K-9 program aligns with community needs and identify its primary operational mission
- Apply K-9 unit management principles, understand liability exposure, coordinate mutual aid resources, and recognize relevant legal frameworks including Graham v. Connor standards
- Implement evidence-based training approaches, select appropriate deployment techniques, fulfill certification benchmarks, and design ongoing competency assessments through scenario-based exercises
- Leverage K-9 programs for community engagement, coordinate with media outlets, and strategically manage social media communications
- Develop financial plans for unit operations, establish protocols for animal welfare and upkeep, and anticipate requirements for program enhancement or expansion
