Police Applicant Background Investigation

This comprehensive 40-hour course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to execute objective, thorough, and legally compliant applicant background investigations that align with professional agency standards.

The curriculum covers essential federal and state statutory frameworks, current case law and Supreme Court rulings, and administrative regulations pertaining to personnel selection and employment. Participants will gain understanding of federal and state fair employment practices, public records accessibility, EEOC guidelines, and ADA requirements, along with how these regulations influence background investigation and applicant selection processes.

Course instruction includes identifying which private and government-based internet search tools yield the most relevant background information, interpreting psychological evaluation reports, executing proper drug screening protocols, and conducting effective interviews with applicants, references, former employers, and personal contacts. Participants will also master documentation best practices for creating comprehensive investigative reports.

The program concludes with a hands-on practical exercise that simulates real-world applicant background investigation scenarios.
