Overview:
This 35-hour certification program prepares law enforcement professionals to effectively serve as Field Training Officers. Participants will gain practical knowledge and proven techniques to enhance their confidence and professionalism when training and mentoring fellow officers. The curriculum draws from a modified version of the San Jose training model and incorporates established best practices in field training instruction.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Explain the San Jose Model and alternative program approaches
- Recognize the specific challenges and responsibilities facing Field Training Officers as instructors
- Identify common rating errors and how to avoid them
- Apply adult learning theory principles to field training situations
- Recognize and address liability concerns in training contexts
- Conduct and interpret performance evaluations effectively
- Deliver instruction using prepared training briefs
- Utilize rating scales and associated reference materials correctly
- Complete Daily Observation Reports with accuracy
- Develop realistic training scenarios and supplemental training plans
- Understand program management and control mechanisms
