Course Overview

This comprehensive 32-hour program is designed to equip first-line supervisors and those aspiring to supervisory positions with essential leadership and management competencies. Participants will gain practical, real-world tools and strategies grounded in extensive professional experience to enhance their effectiveness in the workplace.

Ideal Participants

This course is suited for individuals seeking to develop their leadership capabilities or prepare for first-line supervisory roles, including aspiring field training officers, corporals, senior officers, sergeants, and civilian supervisors.

Course Structure – Four Days, 32 Hours Total

  • Day 1 (8 hours): Exploration of leadership philosophy and mindset, assessment of various leadership styles, examination of morale dynamics, identification of common leadership pitfalls and strategies to prevent them, and introduction to self-care and wellness principles (Part I)
  • Day 2 (8 hours): Broadening organizational perspective, clarification of supervisory roles and responsibilities, principles of accountability and consistency, techniques for delivering constructive feedback, best practices for writing performance evaluations, and continued focus on self-care and wellness (Part II)
  • Day 3 (8 hours): Development of critical thinking skills, mastery of effective communication and conflict resolution techniques, coaching and mentoring methodologies, and self-care and wellness strategies (Part III)
  • Day 4 (8 hours): Contemporary leadership approaches (Punk Rock Leadership), understanding supervisor liability and legal responsibilities, strategies for managing difficult personnel situations, and final self-care and wellness module (Part IV)

Expert Instructors

The course is delivered by highly experienced retired law enforcement leaders: Chief Charles F. Celano Jr. (27-year Tustin Police Department veteran and Chief of Police), Deputy Chief Paul Garaven (30-year law enforcement veteran with extensive supervisory experience and adjunct faculty background), Deputy Chief Jeff Blair (31-year Tustin service member known for community engagement and gang unit expertise), and Lieutenant John Strain (30-year law enforcement veteran with POST Command College credentials and academic background).
