Police Applicant Background Investigation

This comprehensive 40-hour course equips participants with the essential knowledge and competencies needed to execute thorough, impartial, and legally compliant background investigations that align with professional law enforcement standards.

The curriculum covers critical areas including relevant Federal and State statutory requirements, current case law and Supreme Court precedents, and administrative regulations governing personnel selection and employment practices. Participants will gain in-depth understanding of Federal and State employment equity laws, public records access protocols, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines, Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, and how these legal frameworks directly influence background investigation procedures and hiring decisions.

Students will explore effective utilization of private and government-based online resources for gathering background data, interpretation of psychological evaluation reports, appropriate drug screening methodologies, and proven interview strategies for applicants, references, former supervisors, acquaintances, and community members. The course also emphasizes best practices for documenting investigation results in detailed, professional reports.

A hands-on simulation exercise concluding the program allows participants to apply their newly acquired skills in a realistic background investigation scenario.

Intended Audience: This course is designed for sworn and non-sworn law enforcement personnel from public safety, law enforcement, corrections, human resources, and communications departments who participate in any aspect of the employment process, including applicant screening, interviewing, background investigations, and personnel selection.

Course Details: 40 hours of instruction, daily sessions from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Course fee is $895.00 per participant. Multiple session dates and locations are available throughout 2026 and 2027 in Jacksonville, Sarasota, and Altamonte Springs, Florida.
