Seasonal Public Safety Officer

Accepting Applications for the 2026 summer season.  

Public Safety Officers are utilized as civilian support staff within the Patrol and Support Services Divisions. Generally, Public Safety Officers are deployed in the areas of Arrest and Detention and to support Patrol Operations.

Public Safety Officers assigned to Arrest and Detention are responsible for processing and custody of detainees, safety and security of the Public Safety facility, interaction with the general public and the courts.

Public Safety Officers assigned to Patrol Operations handle traffic control, parking enforcement, assist with transportation of arrestees, public safety needs at special events, and the enforcement of civil violations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED recognized by the Maryland Board of Education or able to produce such by June 1 of the year of employment
  • 17 ½ years of age at the time of employment
  • Candidates under the age of 18 will have certain work restrictions in place regarding their assignment
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
  • United States Citizen

Medical Requirements

  • Good physical and mental condition
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 with the ability to recognize basic colors

Pay Rate

  • $19-$20 per hour
  • $500 Hiring Bonus after Academy graduation and 80 hours
  • $250 Retention Bonus for Employment through any Fall Events 

Hiring Process

Candidates must submit an application with preliminary background form attached, successfully complete a written examination (on-line or in-person), structured interview (virtual or in-person), background investigation, and medical examination.

In order to complete the on-line written test and virtual interview, applicants will need access to a computer with camera, and show a State issued driver's license or identification card.  

TESTING PROCESS:

  • On-Line Testing

In an effort to streamline our testing process and alleviate the financial burden of traveling for applicant testing, our written testing and interview may be conducted online. The written test is a minimal cost compared to traveling to take an in-person test, incurring lodging, meals, and other travel expenses. This will allow the applicant to take the online test at their location and time of choice. Upon successful completion of the written test and virtual interview, applicants will then be provided a background investigation packet to submit.

  • In-Person Testing

We are currently offering in-person testing on the below listed dates.  This in-person testing will be conducted on a Saturday at the Ocean City Police Department and will comprise of a written exam and interview in the same day.   

  • December 20, 2025
  • January 10, 2026
  • January 31, 2026

Training Information & Dates:

All of the training will occur at the Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, MD, which is about a 30 minute drive from Ocean City.  There are two training academy start dates depending on the applicant's availability, but all applicants only must attend one of the sessions:

Monday, May 11, 2026

We will work with your professors/teachers to proctor any exams as needed, so you may attend one of these training sessions.
