Dover Police Department Lateral Police Officer Opportunity
The Dover Police Department is a non-civil service agency looking for a highly motivated, community oriented, and service minded lateral transfers to fill an open position. The Dover Police department is comprised of eighteen full-time officers that serve a population of around 6,200 residents.
Located about 15 miles southwest of downtown Boston, Dover is a residential town nestled on the south banks of the Charles River.
Dover is bordered by Natick, Wellesley and Needham to the north, Westwood to the east, Walpole and Medfield to the south, and Sherborn to the west.
We are small agency with a great culture, people, work conditions and a supportive community. The Dover Patrol Association also has a competitive contract with neighboring communities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States as a police officer
- High School Graduate/GED Equivalent. Candidates possessing higher education degrees may receive hiring preference
- Be a United States citizen
- Be at least 21 years old
- Must have an active MA driver's license
- Ability to obtain a valid Firearms License to Carry
- Must pass a Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
- Not use any tobacco products in accordance with M.G.L. Ch. 22C, §. 14
- Must have the ability to pass a thorough background, medical and psychological examination prior to employment
- Must have completed a full-time police academy, or its equivalent, and be POST Certified
Job Description/General Duties
Job Environment:
Work is generally performed in the field under varying weather conditions, with exposure to all types of serious conditions affecting personal safety; works various shifts including evenings and weekends.
Operates police cruiser, standard office equipment, and all police equipment; required to wear appropriate uniform and equipment.
Patrol officer is in constant contact with the general public.
Errors could cause confusion and delay, and on occasion could be costly to correct or could jeopardize personal safety, safety to fellow officers and the general public.
Essential Functions:
Exercises authority consistent with the obligations imposed by the oath of office and is accountable to superior officer.
Patrols a specified beat by foot or by radio patrol car;checks doors and windows, investigates unusual conditions;directs traffic and assists the general public.
Investigates crimes, false alarms, accidents and other emergencies, and reports findings to superior officers.
Makes arrests for violation of law;gathers evidence and prepares reports for court cases;appears in court to present evidence;serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately when so directed by the superior officer.
Serves as desk officer on an assigned shift;answers calls and operates the police switchboard, teletype and radio;maintains station logs;dispatches cruisers and maintains tow, alarm and gas logs;oversees prisoners.
Coordinates efforts with those of other members of the department so that teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and maximum achievement of police objectives.
Maintains police weapons and equipment as needed;ensures that motor vehicle is well maintained mechanically and that it is kept clean both inside and out.
Assists citizens requesting information;counsels’ juveniles and adults when necessary and refers them to persons or agencies where they can obtain further assistance;preserves the peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes and family quarrels.
Is accountable for the securing, receipting, and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.
Directs and expedites the flow of traffic at assigned intersections to prevent accidents, protect pedestrians and ensure the free flow of traffic.
Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:
Working knowledge of the statues, local news, law enforcement rules and regulations, and the court system. Thorough knowledge of rules of conduct as they pertain to a law enforcement officer carrying out duties (i.e. arrest, search and seizure, investigative detention, Miranda warnings, use of force, etc.). Thorough familiarity with assigned routes of patrol including residents, merchants, businesses, roads, alleyways, paths, etc. Sufficient knowledge about police facilities, equipment and operations. Knowledge of the rules and regulations which govern the use of force. Knowledge of the rules and regulations which govern police pursuits, roadblocks, and other emergency tactics when attempting to apprehend fleeing violators. Ability to enforce the law impartially and to make sound judgments under stressful situations. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in general or detailed instructions. Ability to analyze and interpret laws, by-laws, rules and regulations, standards, and procedures, and apply them to specific situations and cases. Ability to conduct thorough criminal investigations and investigations into other matters presented on a case-by-case basis.
Incumbent must possess good problem solving skills.
Physical Requirements:
Work involves constant physical effort. Incumbent must possess the ability to meet required physical standards of age, height, weight and strength. Performance of work involves standing, walking and driving for long periods of time. Physical agility is required to access all types of areas. Emergencies require the ability to use hands and fingers to operate fire arms and other police equipment. May be required to push, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach with hands and arms. Police officer may be required to physically restrain person(s) during arrests using standard police procedures. Excellent eyesight with regard to close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception is required to perform the job.
