Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement

This comprehensive 16-hour training program is designed to serve as a bridge between the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) course and the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program. Participants will develop the skills necessary to recognize, identify, and effectively communicate the indicators of impairment resulting from alcohol, drugs, or a combination of substances.

The curriculum provides an in-depth examination of seven major drug categories and their physiological effects on the human body. Instruction covers how to distinguish drug impairment from medical conditions and other situations that may present similar signs. Special emphasis is placed on the significance of eye examinations in detecting potential drug impairment and identifying possible drug categories involved.

Attendees will receive current information on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing protocols, along with comprehensive coverage of the legal framework surrounding impaired driving enforcement and the procedures required before and after arrest.

Course Topics Include:

  • Understanding "drugs" in the context of DWI enforcement
  • The role of eye examinations in identifying possible impairment
  • Medical conditions and other factors that may mimic signs of impairment
  • Recognition of the seven major drug categories
  • Observable and physiological effects of each drug category
  • Effects of multiple drug combinations
  • Appropriate procedures for addressing drug-impaired and medically-impaired individuals
  • Standardized Field Sobriety Test updates
  • Legal issues in impaired driving cases
  • Pre- and post-arrest procedures

Intended Audience:

This course is designed for patrol officers, DUI investigators and supervisors, prosecutors, and individuals pursuing Drug Recognition Expert certification. Attendance is restricted to active, sworn law enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys employed by government agencies. Florida students should note that FDOT grant-funded seats are available exclusively to Florida sworn law enforcement personnel; federal and military law enforcement personnel in Florida do not qualify for grant-funded positions.

Course Duration:

16 hours (conducted over two days, typically 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM)

Prerequisites:

Participants must have successfully completed the IACP/NHTSA National DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing program or an equivalent course. Successful completion also requires demonstrating proficiency in administering the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing battery. A maximum of two proficiency test attempts is permitted.

Important Note:

While this course includes the content formerly offered in the 8-hour Drugs That Impair Driving program, successful completion does not qualify an officer to function as a Drug Recognition Expert. DRE certification requires completion of the dedicated DRE course.

Tuition Information:

Standard tuition is $495.00. However, Florida law enforcement officers may qualify for grant-funded seats at no cost based on Florida Department of Transportation subgrant approval. Eligible Florida officers should register through the Florida Grant Funded Training Catalog for free tuition consideration.
