Traffic Crash Reconstruction

This advanced course represents the third offering in a specialized three-course series designed for professionals working in traffic crash investigation and reconstruction. Building on the foundation provided by IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course, this program deepens participants' comprehension of vehicle dynamics through rigorous study of time and distance calculations, two-dimensional momentum analysis, and impact speed determination using momentum-based equations.

Course Topics

• Examination of the derivation and origin of standard speed calculation formulas
• Determining vehicle speed at impact using conservation of linear momentum principles
• Understanding vehicle behavior during collisions using Newton's three laws of motion
• Analysis of commercial vehicle and motorcycle dynamics in collision scenarios
• Methods for establishing direction of travel, initial contact points, and vehicle positioning on roadways

Learning Approach

The curriculum emphasizes practical application through extensive project-based work. Participants will diagram and analyze multiple crash scenarios and perform vector sum analysis on each scenario, gaining hands-on experience in crash reconstruction methodologies.

Prerequisites

Due to the technical complexity of the subject matter, successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or equivalent is mandatory. Participants without a robust background in mathematics and physics are strongly encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course before enrolling.

Important Notes

Florida law enforcement officers should be aware that this course does not qualify for Salary Incentive Credit for the FDLE "Traffic Accident Reconstruction" course. Individuals holding ACTAR accreditation may retake this course for continuing education units only once every five years following their initial five-year accreditation period for professional skill enhancement purposes. This course is not eligible for certificate discounts.
