DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)

This comprehensive 24-hour training program, offered by the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), equips law enforcement professionals with the skills necessary to identify and assess drivers suspected of impaired driving. Participants will develop proficiency from the initial vehicle observation through suspect arrest and case processing procedures.

The curriculum focuses on NHTSA-standardized detection methods and sobriety evaluation techniques, while also addressing critical legal considerations including Miranda rights and Implied Consent laws. Attendees will gain practical knowledge in documenting observations for effective courtroom testimony and learn field enforcement strategies that meet professional standards.

Topics Covered

  • Visual detection techniques for impaired drivers
  • Legal framework and enforcement considerations for DUI cases
  • Standardized field sobriety testing procedures, including horizontal gaze nystagmus assessment
  • Documentation strategies for court proceedings
  • Sobriety checkpoints and roadblock operations
  • Video recording and evidence management
  • Two NHTSA-recommended practical drinking exercises

Intended Audience

This course is designed for patrol officers, DUI investigators and supervisors, and prosecutors. Participation is restricted to active, sworn law enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys employed by governmental agencies. Florida-based sworn law enforcement officers may qualify for FDOT grant-funded tuition assistance through a subgrant program; federal and military law enforcement personnel in Florida are ineligible for grant funding.

Course Format

Classes run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM across three consecutive days. Tuition is $695.00, though qualifying Florida officers may attend select sessions at no cost through available grant-funded seats. Multiple class sessions are scheduled throughout Florida locations including Port Richey, South Miami, Orlando, Fernandina Beach, Cocoa, Ocala, Sarasota, Stuart, and Marathon during 2026 and 2027.

Student feedback consistently highlights the instructors' expertise, the course's practical relevance to field operations, and the valuable hands-on training with actual scenarios, all contributing to increased confidence in conducting DUI investigations and standardized field sobriety testing procedures.
