Course Overview

This program addresses a critical challenge in law enforcement and investigative practice: experienced investigators frequently struggle during interviews due to inadequate advanced interviewing skills. The training identifies why interviews often fail, including lack of formal training, outdated techniques, reliance on unscientific approaches, and the use of flawed methodologies that increase liability risks. The solution presented is a narrative-based approach grounded in empirical behavioral research designed to maximize both the quality and quantity of information obtained during interviews.

Learning Objectives

Participants will develop competency in:

  • Conducting effective narrative-based interviews that encourage subjects to provide complete, unprompted information
  • Applying eight core principles to enhance interview consistency and reliability
  • Implementing proven techniques to recover up to 60% more information from victims, witnesses, and suspects
  • Identifying three characteristics that distinguish successful interviews from unsuccessful ones
  • Understanding why common deception detection methods often fail and recognizing the three most frequent investigator mistakes
  • Preventing subject contamination through the elimination of leading questions, biases, and unfounded assumptions
  • Recognizing three specific interviewer errors that can lead to false confessions and compromise statement integrity
  • Adapting interview strategies based on five subject response behaviors including anger, depression, denial, bargaining, and acceptance
  • Differentiating between influence, persuasion, manipulation, and coercion with an ethical and practical framework for appropriate application

This training is part of Stan Walters' Practical Kinesic Interview and Interrogation series, which emphasizes behavioral analysis and scientifically validated methods. All course content is audited against current peer-reviewed published research before delivery.
