Course Overview

This program addresses a critical gap in law enforcement and investigative practice: skilled investigators frequently underperform during interviews due to insufficient advanced training in scientifically validated interviewing techniques. The course examines why interviews often fail, including the absence of formal training, outdated methods, reliance on unproven theories about deception, and the use of problematic techniques that increase agency liability.

The training provides a narrative-based methodology grounded in empirical behavioral research and peer-reviewed scientific findings. Participants will develop practical skills to substantially increase both the quality and volume of information gathered during interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects.

What You Will Learn

  • Execute effective narrative-based interviews that encourage comprehensive, unprompted disclosure
  • Implement eight core principles to enhance interview consistency and reliability
  • Apply proven techniques that can recover up to 60% more information from subjects
  • Identify the three defining characteristics that distinguish successful interviews from unsuccessful ones
  • Understand why deception detection commonly fails and recognize the three most prevalent assessment errors
  • Eliminate subject contamination through careful questioning and controlled interviewing methods
  • Recognize specific interviewer mistakes that can lead to false confessions and statement invalidity
  • Adapt your approach based on five different subject response behaviors including anger, depression, denial, bargaining, and acceptance
  • Make informed distinctions between influence, persuasion, manipulation, and coercion in ethical interviewing practice
