Course Overview

This comprehensive training program is designed for law enforcement detectives and investigators who focus on homicide cases and violent crimes against persons. The curriculum delivers a methodical, sequential framework for managing homicide investigations from the moment of the initial report through final case preparation and courtroom presentation.

Throughout the course, participants will examine critical concepts including classifications of homicide, offender behavioral patterns, suicide investigations, staged or equivocal death scenes, and prosecutions involving missing remains. The program also dedicates significant time to the investigation of unidentified human remains.

Key emphasis is placed on meticulous case documentation, effective report writing, courtroom readiness, and productive relationships with medical examiners, coroners, and district attorneys. The training additionally covers modern investigative resources, such as cell phone forensics and advanced data analysis tools, while examining how social media influences contemporary investigative work.

About the Instructor

Robert G. Lowery, Jr. served as Commander of the Greater St. Louis Major Case Squad, one of the nation's elite multi-jurisdictional violent crime task forces dedicated to high-profile murder investigations across Missouri and Illinois, serving a population of 2.5 million across 12 counties. He established critical partnerships with federal agencies including the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, ATF, Secret Service, and IRS to enhance resources for active homicide investigations. Lowery founded the Technical Operations Group, a specialized unit providing electronic surveillance and suspect location capabilities, and created the Family Liaison Program to assign trained investigators to work with homicide victim families. He has collaborated with over 500 law enforcement investigators from more than 100 agencies on complex murder cases. Lowery holds memberships in the International Homicide Investigators Association, the Federal Agency Task Force on Missing and Exploited Children, the International Coroners and Medical Examiners Association, and the FBI National Academy Association.
