Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level II

This advanced course provides participants with contemporary theories, methodologies, and principles of collision analysis, building upon foundational crash reconstruction knowledge. The curriculum explores both established and emerging topics in the field, making it suitable for in-service traffic crash reconstructionists as well as candidates pursuing ACTAR certification.

Participants will study the mathematical equations and frameworks used to interpret collision mechanics, with particular focus on skid characteristics, spin analysis, critical speed yaw analysis, and friction calculations. The course examines key concepts including time-distance analysis, uniform circular motion, pole impacts, and conservation of linear momentum.

Course Topics

  • Geometry, trigonometry, and applied mathematical principles
  • Dynamics, kinematics, and Newton's Laws of Motion expressed as vector equations
  • Drag and acceleration factor testing and determination
  • Critical speed yaw analysis
  • Distinctions between CSY and spin analysis
  • Time-distance analysis
  • Pole and narrow object impact reconstruction
  • Conservation of linear momentum applications
  • Rollover crash reconstruction fundamentals
  • Uniform projectile motion and airborne speed analysis

Course Format

The 40-hour program incorporates multiple in-class projects and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary project designed to reinforce learning objectives and develop practical skills.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for law enforcement and private traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, animators, graphic designers, and ACTAR candidates.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of IPTM's Traffic Crash Reconstruction course or equivalent is required. Participants without a strong mathematics and physics background are encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course prior to enrollment.

Continuing Education

This course is eligible for 40 ACTAR Continuing Education Units.
