Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement

This comprehensive 16-hour training program bridges the knowledge gap between the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) course and the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) course. Participants will develop the skills necessary to recognize, classify, and document indicators of impairment stemming from alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both substances.

Course Overview

The program provides an in-depth examination of the seven primary drug categories and their physiological effects on the human body. Instructors will also cover medical conditions and other factors that can mimic signs of impairment. Special emphasis is placed on the significance of eye examinations as a diagnostic tool for identifying drug impairment and narrowing down potential drug categories.

Participants will receive current information on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing procedures and gain understanding of the legal framework surrounding impaired driving enforcement, including pre-arrest and post-arrest protocols.

Topics Covered

  • Definition and classification of drugs in the context of DWI enforcement
  • The role of eye examinations in revealing impairment indicators
  • Medical conditions and other situations that may produce impairment-like signs
  • Recognition of the seven major drug categories
  • Observable and physiological effects of each major drug category
  • Effects resulting from multiple drug combinations
  • Appropriate procedures for evaluating drug-impaired or medically-impaired individuals
  • Current Standardized Field Sobriety Test procedures
  • Legal considerations in impaired driving cases
  • Pre- and post-arrest procedures

Target Audience

This course is designed for patrol officers, DUI investigators, supervisors, prosecutors, and individuals pursuing Drug Recognition Expert certification. Enrollment is restricted to active, sworn law enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys employed by governmental agencies. Note that this course does not qualify officers to serve as certified Drug Recognition Experts but does incorporate the former 8-hour Drugs That Impair Driving curriculum.

Prerequisites

Participants must have successfully completed the IACP/NHTSA National DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing program or an equivalent course. Attendees must also demonstrate proficiency in administering the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing battery to successfully complete this program. A maximum of two proficiency testing attempts is permitted.
