The course begins with techniques for recognizing impaired driving and progresses through standardized sobriety testing procedures endorsed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Participants will also explore enforcement strategies, legal considerations including Miranda rights and Implied Consent laws, and methods for thoroughly documenting observations suitable for courtroom testimony.

Course Topics

  • Legal framework governing DUI enforcement
  • Standardized field sobriety testing, including horizontal gaze nystagmus assessment
  • Effective observation documentation for court proceedings
  • Sobriety checkpoint operations and roadblock procedures
  • Video documentation considerations and best practices
  • Two NHTSA-recommended practical drinking exercises

Intended Audience

This training is designed for patrol officers, DUI investigators, supervisors, and prosecuting attorneys. The course is restricted to active, sworn law enforcement personnel and prosecuting attorneys employed by governmental agencies. Florida sworn law enforcement officers may be eligible for grant-funded tuition assistance through the Florida Department of Transportation, though federal and military law enforcement personnel in Florida do not qualify for this funding.

Course Duration and Schedule

The program runs for 24 hours with daily class sessions from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Multiple sessions are offered throughout 2026-2027 at various Florida locations, including Port Richey, South Miami, Orlando, Cocoa, Ocala, Sarasota, Stuart, and Marathon. Standard tuition is $695.00, with grant-funded options available at no cost for eligible Florida law enforcement personnel.

Students consistently praise the exceptional quality of instruction, practical real-world experience of the training staff, and the realistic hands-on practice opportunities that build confidence in conducting DUI investigations and standardized field sobriety tests.
