Grant Research & Writing Basics

This course is designed for public safety professionals seeking to understand how to identify and secure alternative funding through grant opportunities. With many departments operating under budget constraints due to economic challenges, accessing available grant funds from federal, state, and private sources has become increasingly important. The Federal Government released over $700 million in grant opportunities in early June 2026, making it essential for departments to develop the skills needed to compete for these funds when they become available.

Course Overview:

This training program covers the fundamentals of grant research, writing, and the post-award process. While designed for individuals new to grant writing, the course includes examination of a real, fully-funded grant exceeding $600,000 as a practical learning tool.

Learning Objectives:

  • Conduct research across a broad spectrum of grant opportunities from both government and private sectors
  • Create and establish accounts with Federal agencies responsible for distributing grant funds
  • Develop proficiency in writing different categories of grant applications
  • Understand what occurs following grant approval and receipt of funding
  • Identify and track emerging public and private funding opportunities

Required Materials:

  • Note-taking supplies
  • Laptop or internet-enabled device
