Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigation - Level II

This advanced course serves as the second installment in the Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigation series and is intended to build upon the foundational knowledge gained in the Level I course. Participants will explore in-depth analysis of commercial motor vehicle systems, dynamics, and their application to crash reconstruction investigations.

The course covers several critical areas of commercial vehicle investigation. Students will examine the ABS air brake systems found on commercial truck-tractors and trailers, including hands-on field testing to measure air brake chamber pressure. Participants will gain practical experience through field inspections where they will conduct actual brake tests on commercial vehicles.

Additional topics include the development of free-body diagrams and equilibrium equations for determining axle weight distribution, assessment of quasi-static and dynamic rollover tendencies, and analysis of suspension spring rates. The course provides instruction on off-tracking phenomena at both high and low speeds, including how to calculate maximum off-track distances. Students will also learn to interpret rotational motion analysis in commercial vehicle crashes and explore how transmission types and gear positions can be used to establish vehicle speeds at the time of impact.

Topics Covered

  • Tractor-trailer ABS air brake systems
  • Hydraulic brake systems in commercial vehicles and fluid pressure boosting mechanisms
  • Quasi-static and dynamic rollover propensities and liquid load analysis
  • Axle weight analysis and load reconstruction
  • Off-tracking calculations
  • Speed determination from gear ratio
  • Rotational mechanics
  • Field inspection procedures
