Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigation - Level I

This comprehensive 40-hour course represents the first level in a specialized series designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to investigate collisions involving commercial motor vehicles. The program focuses on the distinctive characteristics and crash dynamics specific to these larger vehicles.

Participants will develop a thorough understanding of commercial motor vehicle nomenclature, mechanical systems, and operational principles. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practical exercises, including vehicle testing, attendees will gain competence in identifying and analyzing the mechanical components and systems that may be relevant to collision investigations.

  • Brake system configurations and operational principles
  • Wheels, rims, and tire characteristics
  • Steering, suspension, and frame systems
  • Trailer coupling mechanisms and fifth wheels

Intended Audience

This course is appropriate for law enforcement personnel, private sector traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative specialists, as well as animators and graphic designers involved in crash reconstruction.

Prerequisites

Participants must have successfully completed IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or an equivalent program. A solid foundation in crash investigation techniques and familiarity with mathematical formulas used in basic investigations is essential, as the course material builds upon these foundational concepts.
