Undercover Drug Enforcement Techniques

This 40-hour course prepares undercover officers and cover team members for the complex demands of undercover drug enforcement operations. Participants will develop critical competencies in establishing cover identities, executing controlled purchases, and properly documenting investigative activities through affidavits and search warrant applications. The training addresses the legal, operational, and safety considerations that are essential in this challenging field of law enforcement.

The curriculum covers the distinct qualifications and specialized needs of undercover investigators. Attendees will gain practical skills in constructing believable cover stories and maintaining appropriate appearance, techniques for simulating drug use, effective use of street vernacular and slang, and strategies for managing and redirecting suspicion. Additionally, the course examines confidential informant management and clearly defines the responsibilities of cover team personnel.

Experiential learning through role-playing scenarios and hands-on field exercises forms a central component of this program, allowing participants to refine their undercover presence and interaction strategies across various drug trafficking scenarios. Some field exercises are conducted during evening hours.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for narcotic investigators, narcotics unit supervisors, specialized units engaged in narcotic investigations, and drug unit commanders. Enrollment is restricted to sworn law enforcement officers and personnel directly assigned to law enforcement agencies.
