Bloodstain Interpretation for Detectives

This specialized 16-hour training program is tailored for detectives who investigate violent crimes but do not have primary responsibility for documenting or collecting blood evidence at crime scenes.

Course Objective

The program aims to expand detectives' expertise in bloodstain pattern analysis, particularly those investigating homicides and crimes against persons. Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of how bloodstain evidence functions as a forensic investigative tool and learn to effectively incorporate it throughout their investigative processes. The course emphasizes understanding the relationship between bloodstain patterns, the events that created them, and the movements of individuals involved.

  • Identifying bloodstains and patterns that offer probative value regarding the actions and individual movements connected to bleeding events
  • Extracting relevant evidence from scenes that have been altered
  • Distinguishing between deaths resulting from medical causes versus those of a suspicious nature

Intended Audience

This course is designed for sworn law enforcement officers, detectives, investigators, and military investigative personnel. It is not appropriate for crime scene investigators, as the curriculum does not include laboratory components. Class enrollment is restricted to sworn law enforcement officers and personnel directly assigned to law enforcement agencies.
