Traffic Crash Reconstruction by IPTM
Traffic Crash Reconstruction
Course Overview
This is the third course in a comprehensive three-course series offered by the Institute of Police Technology and Management. Traffic Crash Reconstruction builds upon the foundational knowledge from the Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course, providing participants with an in-depth exploration of vehicle dynamics and the mathematical principles underlying crash analysis.
Course Content
The curriculum covers the derivation and application of widely-used speed calculation formulas, methods for determining vehicle speed at impact using conservation of linear momentum principles, and analysis of vehicle behavior during collisions using Newton's three laws of motion. The course examines how commercial vehicles and motorcycles behave differently in collision scenarios and teaches techniques for establishing direction of travel, initial contact points, and vehicle positioning at the time of impact.
The course emphasizes practical, hands-on learning through extensive project work. Participants will diagram and analyze multiple crash scenarios, perform vector sum analysis, and gain firsthand experience in crash reconstruction methodology.
Intended Audience
This training is designed for law enforcement officers, private traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, animators, and graphic designers who work in crash reconstruction or related fields.
Course Duration and Schedule
The program consists of 80 hours of instruction, typically conducted over a two-week period with daily class sessions from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Prerequisites
Due to the technical nature of the material, successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course (or equivalent) is mandatory. Participants without a strong background in mathematics and physics are strongly encouraged to first complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course.
Required Materials
Participants must bring a scientific calculator and a compass. A 1½-inch three-ring binder is recommended for organizing course materials.
Cost
The course fee is $1,195.00.
Important Notes
This course does not qualify for Salary Incentive Credit for the FDLE "Traffic Accident Reconstruction" course in Florida. Individuals holding ACTAR accreditation may retake this course for continuing education units only once every five years following their initial five-year accreditation period for the purpose of skill updates. This course is not eligible for certificate discounts.
