Crime Scene Processing Workshop

This comprehensive 24-hour course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively manage crime scenes from initial request through courtroom testimony. Through a combination of instructional presentations, hands-on exercises, and real-world case studies, attendees will develop confidence in their ability to recognize, document, collect, preserve, process, and analyze physical evidence at crime scenes.

Course Overview

The workshop emphasizes the critical interpretation of discovered evidence, its significance within the crime scene context, and its application in criminal investigations. Participants will engage in practical exercises covering latent print development techniques, alternative light source applications for scene processing, bloodstain pattern analysis, and chemical enhancement methods. The course also addresses proper courtroom procedures and strategies for effectively presenting crime scene evidence to legal professionals.

• Examination of evidence-related crime scenes ranging from property crimes to violent offenses
• Scene documentation through photography
• DNA identification, location, and collection procedures
• Latent fingerprint development and enhancement

• Bloodstain pattern documentation and chemical analysis

Intended Audience

This course serves crime scene technicians, patrol officers, detectives at all experience levels, investigations supervisors, medical examiner and coroner investigators, and military investigative personnel. This course is restricted to active sworn and non-sworn law enforcement and medical examiner personnel.

Prerequisites

Participants should possess some field experience or foundational knowledge of crime scene processing techniques.

What to Bring

Required: Appropriate clothing for handling evidence processing with chemicals and powders. Protective gloves and other necessary safety equipment will be supplied.

Recommended: A digital camera for documenting field exercise activities.
