Overview:

The transition to supervision represents a pivotal moment in law enforcement careers, and the effectiveness of first-line supervisors directly impacts organizational success. This comprehensive leadership program is specifically tailored for individuals stepping into supervisory roles, newly promoted supervisors, corporals, officers-in-charge, and sergeants seeking to enhance their leadership capabilities and influence within their agencies.

Rather than a superficial compliance course, this training integrates state requirements with nationally recognized accreditation standards to deliver practical, immediately applicable leadership skills. Participants will develop competency in confident first-day leadership, performance management with transparency, purposeful communication strategies, proper documentation that safeguards both individuals and agencies, and the ability to guide officers effectively in today's challenging policing environment.

Curriculum Details:

Day 1 - Communication & Supervision Foundations: Communication process fundamentals, positional development cycles, recognizing and preventing supervisory bias, generational awareness, written and verbal communication, feedback mechanisms, managing diverse employee groups, meeting facilitation, media interaction strategies, perspective shifts in supervisory roles, working effectively with supervisors, establishing discipline baselines, proactive team oversight, employee counseling for minor infractions, progressive discipline frameworks, and proper documentation methods.

Day 2 - Personnel & Performance Management: Practical strategies for common workplace issues including attendance and punctuality, citizen complaint assessment and processing, managing marginal and problematic employees, addressing serious personnel matters, early warning systems and documentation, roll call management and officer direction, report review procedures, supervisory responsibilities in use-of-force incidents and pursuits, and civilian/volunteer oversight.

Day 3 - Critical Incidents & Scene Management: Incident command fundamentals, crime scene management and special considerations, critical incident mitigation and response, supervisor responsibilities during calls involving autistic individuals and those experiencing emotional distress, mass gathering and civil unrest protocols, officer-involved shooting response procedures, post-incident debriefing, critical incident stress management, and employee assistance program coordination.

Day 4 - Operations & Development: Budget and procurement oversight, emerging leader identification and development strategies, team motivation and morale-building, performance evaluation and personnel assessment, video evidence management including body-worn and in-car camera footage, vehicle accident investigation, work-related injury investigation, employee due process and legal protections under officer bill of rights standards, community stakeholder relationship-building, and professional development planning.

Optional Day 5 - Applied Practice: Scenario-based training labs and open discussion on contemporary law enforcement challenges, allowing participants to practice and refine skills learned throughout the program.

Certification: POST Certified in Connecticut, Idaho, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (MPOETC), and New Mexico (through 8/17/2025). Extended 40-hour, 5-day certification delivery available for agencies with specific requirements.
