Course Overview

This comprehensive 40-hour training program is designed to equip law enforcement professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to properly investigate officer-involved shooting and use-of-force incidents. The course runs for five days, with the first four days scheduled from 8am to 5pm local time and the final day from 8am to 4pm local time.

Course Focus

Police officers hold a unique responsibility as government officials authorized to exercise deadly force in specific circumstances. This course emphasizes that with such authority comes an obligation to ensure that all uses of force are both justified and reasonable. Proper investigation of these incidents is essential to maintaining community trust, preserving agency credibility, and ensuring fair treatment for all parties involved. The consequences of inadequate investigations extend to civil litigation, departmental reputation, and the potential freedom or incarceration of officers involved.

What You Will Learn

This in-depth program presents investigative best practices tailored to modern law enforcement, establishing a standardized and systematic framework for conducting use-of-force investigations. The course provides practical tools including sample checklists, templates, forms, reports, and policy guidelines that agencies can implement immediately. Instruction covers current issues relevant to today's environment, including social media implications, analysis of video evidence from body cameras, dash cameras, cell phones, and surveillance systems, media management and public relations strategies, legal considerations, crime scene processing and reconstruction techniques, and the effective use of 3D scanning and aerial drone photography to clearly communicate investigation findings to stakeholders.

Target Audience

This training is intended for sworn law enforcement officers and prosecuting or district attorneys at both federal and state levels.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion, participants will possess the knowledge, competence, and confidence required to thoroughly investigate and properly document any use-of-force incident, including those involving serious injury or fatality.
