This advanced course expands on the foundational knowledge from Level I by integrating mathematical and physics principles into your event data recorder-based crash investigations. Participants will develop competency in applying complex mathematical concepts to EDR data analysis for challenging non-central collision scenarios.
Course Overview
The program begins with a comprehensive review of essential mathematical and physics fundamentals required for sophisticated EDR data analysis. Key areas of focus include the Law of Cosines, the Law of Sines, momentum principles, closing velocity calculations, and change in velocity relationships. Students will learn practical applications of each concept within the context of traffic crash reconstruction.
Real-world EDR reports from diverse collision types serve as the foundation for learning how to extract and calculate all necessary values for thorough reconstructions. Interactive projects and problem sets throughout the course reinforce lecture content and equip participants with practical skills for conducting actual reconstructions in the field.
Topics Covered
- Solving momentum problems using EDR data when critical elements such as departure speeds and angles are unavailable, commonly referred to as "triangle momentum"
- How restitution influences momentum-based reconstruction methodologies
- Impact of rotation on delta-V measurements and closing speed calculations, including Effective Mass Ratio considerations
- Effects of external forces on momentum-based reconstructions
- Adjusting EDR delta-V readings when accelerometers are positioned away from the center-of-mass
Intended Audience
This course is designed for law enforcement crash investigators, private traffic crash investigation professionals, insurance fraud specialists, claims adjusters, engineers, legal professionals, safety officers, military investigators, and collision simulation software users. Prerequisites
Successful completion of both IPTM's Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level I and Traffic Crash Reconstruction courses (or equivalent training) is required. Participants without strong mathematical and physics foundations are strongly encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course prior to enrollment.
