Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level II

This advanced course expands on the foundational knowledge from IPTM's Level I program by introducing mathematical and physics applications to Event Data Recorder (EDR) based collision reconstruction work. Participants will develop the skills necessary to apply complex mathematical concepts when analyzing EDR data in intricate, non-central collision scenarios.

Course Content: The program begins with a thorough review of the mathematical and physics principles required for analyzing EDR information in complicated collision reconstructions. Key subject areas include the Law of Cosines, the Law of Sines, momentum principles, closing velocity, and velocity change relationships. Instruction demonstrates practical applications of each concept to real-world reconstruction scenarios. Using authentic EDR reports from multiple collision types, students learn to identify all necessary values for thorough reconstructions. Coursework includes projects and problem sets designed to reinforce lecture topics and prepare participants for conducting actual collision reconstructions.

Topics Covered:

  • Addressing momentum problems with missing EDR data elements, including departure speeds and angles (triangle momentum)
  • Impact of restitution on momentum-based reconstructions
  • Effects of rotation on delta-V and closing speed through Effective Mass Ratio analysis
  • Influence of external forces on momentum calculations
  • Adjusting EDR delta-V measurements for accelerometers positioned away from the center-of-mass

Intended Audience: This course serves law enforcement and independent traffic crash investigators, insurance fraud specialists and claims adjusters, engineers, legal professionals, safety directors, military investigative personnel, and collision animation and simulation software users. Duration: 40 hours

Prerequisites: Successful completion of IPTM's Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level I and Traffic Crash Reconstruction courses (or equivalents) is required. Participants without strong mathematics and physics backgrounds are strongly encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course prior to enrollment.

Requirements: Bring a laptop computer or tablet for accessing course materials and a calculator capable of trigonometric and square-root functions.

CE Credits: This course qualifies for 40 ACTAR Continuing Education Units.
