This advanced course expands upon the foundational knowledge from IPTM's Level I program by integrating mathematical and physics principles into your event data recorder (EDR) based reconstruction work.
The program begins with a comprehensive review of the mathematical and physics fundamentals required to analyze EDR data in intricate non-central collision scenarios. Participants will explore essential concepts including the Law of Cosines, the Law of Sines, momentum analysis, closing velocity calculations, and change in velocity relationships, with emphasis on their practical application in reconstructions.
Real-world EDR reports from numerous collision cases will be examined to demonstrate the process of extracting all necessary values for comprehensive reconstruction analysis. Structured projects and problem sets reinforce lecture concepts and equip participants with practical skills for conducting actual reconstructions.
Topics Covered
- Resolving momentum-based problems using EDR data when certain data elements like departure speeds and angles are unavailable (triangle momentum analysis)
- The role of restitution in momentum-based reconstructions
- Rotation effects on delta-V and closing speed calculations, including Effective Mass Ratio considerations
- External force impacts on momentum reconstructions
- Adjusting EDR delta-V values for accelerometers not positioned at the center-of-mass

Prerequisites
Participants must have successfully completed both IPTM's Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level I and Traffic Crash Reconstruction courses, or equivalent training. For those without a strong foundation in mathematics and physics, IPTM strongly recommends completing the 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course prior to enrollment.
