Fundamentals of Traffic Crash Dynamics

This course presents a comprehensive exploration of traffic crash dynamics, breaking down complex concepts into practical, manageable components that can be addressed through straightforward mathematical principles. Rather than focusing heavily on computational methods, the course emphasizes the critical skill of problem identification and determining the proper approach to reach solutions. Students will develop effective problem-solving methodologies that combine visual representation and foundational understanding of dynamics principles.

Course Topics

  • Physics fundamentals and core concepts
  • Forces that act on vehicles during braking
  • Application of Conservation of Linear Momentum
  • Spin analysis and critical speed yaw evaluation
  • Impact scenarios involving poles and narrow objects
  • Rotational mechanics principles
  • Time-distance analyses and related projects
  • Damage momentum and damage energy assessment
  • Projectile motion and airborne speed calculations
  • Rollover crash investigation fundamentals

Intended Participants

This course serves law enforcement professionals, private sector crash investigators, insurance claims adjusters, civil engineers, prosecutors, safety professionals, military investigators, and multimedia specialists. Educators who deliver traffic crash reconstruction training to their organizations or departments will also find valuable content.
