Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation

Course Overview

This 80-hour course represents the second offering in a three-part sequence designed to build upon foundational knowledge acquired in IPTM's At-Scene Traffic Crash/Traffic Homicide Investigation course. Participants will engage with sophisticated methodologies and theoretical frameworks that characterize advanced traffic crash investigations.

Course Content

The program examines intricate vehicle dynamics including acceleration, deceleration, and airborne motion scenarios. Students will develop competency in speed estimation techniques derived from falls, vaults, and rollover incidents, as well as calculations involving kinetic energy and linear momentum. The curriculum addresses the evaluation of vehicle lighting systems, tire conditions, and collision-related damage patterns to reconstruct vehicle behavior during impact events.

A substantial portion of instruction focuses on applying acceleration and deceleration factors alongside perception and reaction time variables to establish accurate time and distance calculations for vehicles involved in collisions. Topics covered include mathematical review, deceleration factor application, speed estimation methodologies, combined velocity applications, vehicle dynamics principles, temporal and spatial analysis, vehicle crush documentation with linear perimeter measurement, and practical in-class projects to reinforce equation utilization.

Target Audience

This course serves law enforcement professionals, private sector traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, legal practitioners, safety specialists, military investigative personnel, and collision animation and simulation specialists.

Prerequisites and Preparation

Completion of IPTM's At-Scene Traffic Crash/Traffic Homicide Investigation course or equivalent is mandatory. Participants lacking substantial mathematical and physics backgrounds are strongly encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics online course prior to enrollment. Students should review all formulas and materials from their foundational or at-scene traffic crash course before attending class.

Materials Required

Participants must bring a scientific calculator, compass, and work clothing suitable for outdoor activities in various weather conditions. A camera for documenting field exercises is recommended but not required.

Class Fee

The registration fee is $1,195.00 per student. This course is not eligible for certificate discounts.

Important Note

For Florida law enforcement officers, this course does not satisfy Salary Incentive Credit requirements for the FDLE Advanced Traffic Accident Investigations course.
