Traffic Crash Reconstruction

Course Overview

This advanced course represents the third offering in IPTM's comprehensive three-course traffic crash investigation series. Building on the foundation established in the Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course, this program provides an intensive exploration of vehicle dynamics and mathematical analysis techniques essential for modern crash reconstruction.

Course Content

Students will engage in rigorous study of time and distance calculations, two-dimensional momentum analysis, and impact speed determinations using momentum-based equations. The curriculum covers the mathematical derivation and practical application of widely-used speed formulas, vehicle velocity determination at impact through conservation of linear momentum principles, collision behavior analysis using Newton's three laws of motion, specialized dynamics of commercial vehicles and motorcycles during collisions, and methods for establishing vehicle direction of travel, initial contact points, and roadway positioning.

The course emphasizes hands-on project work, requiring each participant to diagram and analyze multiple crash scenarios while performing vector sum analysis on each scenario studied.

Target Audience

This program is designed for law enforcement and private traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, animators, and graphic designers.

Program Details

Duration: 80 hours
Class Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Course Fee: $1,195.00

Prerequisites

Successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or equivalent is mandatory due to the highly technical nature of the subject matter. Students without a strong mathematics and physics foundation are strongly encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics online course prior to enrollment.

Required Materials

  • Scientific calculator
  • Compass

Recommended Materials

  • Three-ring binder (1.5 inch capacity)

Additional Information

For Florida law enforcement officers, this course does not qualify for Salary Incentive Credit in relation to the FDLE course "Traffic Accident Reconstruction." ACTAR-accredited individuals may retake this course for continuing education units one time during each five-year accreditation period following their initial five-year certification period to maintain current skills. This course is not eligible for certificate discounts.
