Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older at the time of hire
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Clearly speak and understand the English language
  • Demonstrate strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Be able to multi-task and work effectively under stressful conditions
  • Be proficient with technology and computer systems

Testing & Hiring Process

The selection process includes:

  • Oral Board Examination
  • Extensive background investigation
  • Psychological examination
  • Medical examination
  • Controlled substance screening

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Animal Control Officer performs a wide range of field, enforcement, and community-focused duties, including but not limited to:

  • Patrol streets to locate, capture, and transport stray domestic and wild animals to appropriate shelters
  • Respond to animal-related complaints and ordinance violations, including:
    • Animals running at large
    • Animal bites
    • Property damage
    • Injuries involving animals
  • Remove dead, injured, or dangerous animals from public and residential areas
  • Investigate violations of animal control ordinances and issue warnings or citations
  • Prepare daily, monthly, and annual activity reports
  • Appear in court to testify in animal control cases
  • Serve criminal or civil notices related to animal control enforcement
  • Coordinate public education and outreach efforts, including:
    • Bear awareness and management
    • Rabies vaccination clinics
    • Animals left in vehicles
    • Sick or injured wildlife
  • Work closely with media, public interest groups, and local businesses to promote humane animal care
  • Maintain availability by radio or telephone for emergency consultation
  • Exercise independent judgment during difficult or emergency situations
  • Maintain and disinfect vehicles and equipment used to transport animals
  • Comply with all Federal, State, and Town laws and ordinances
  • Coordinate with police supervisory staff during investigations and emergencies
  • Participate in budget development, equipment purchasing, and supply management
  • Serve on employee committees as assigned
  • Maintain uniform and grooming standards in accordance with General Order 22-3
  • Maintain membership in the Connecticut State Animal Response Team
