 NORWICH POLICE DEPARTMENT

MISSION

To protect life, safeguard property, and maintain social order within carefully prescribed ethical and constitutional restrictions while providing community-based police services with compassion and concern.

 

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES

The Police Department's activities include:

  • Preventative planning for public safety
  • Enforcement of laws
  • Administration of police personnel
  • Traffic authority
  • Issuance and recording of permits for vendors, auctioneers, and firearms


PATROL DIVISIONS

The Patrol Division is the most visible and recognizable unit of the police department, providing 24-hour response to the community. These officers are largely responsible for laying the foundation for a positive rapport between the public and the police department.

Patrol officers must be able to quickly evaluate problematic and sometimes escalating situations and make determinations as to the appropriate course of action that should be taken. Oftentimes, the resolution may include referrals to federal, state, or municipal agencies whose programs are specifically designed to assist those in need of special services.

They are by far the largest division, providing continuous, diligent, service to the City of Norwich.

Bicycle Patrol: Bicycle Patrol Bicycle Patrol Officers receive specialized training in biking techniques related to police work through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. Because of their high visibility, members of the Bicycle Patrol play a significant role in fostering and maintaining positive relationships between the police, town residents, and local business owners.

Crisis Intervention: The Crisis Intervention Team composes officers who use understanding and skills gained through specific training to identify and provide the most effective and compassionate response possible to police situations involving people in a mental health crisis.

Harbor Patrol: The Harbor Patrol is a specialized unit dedicated to water safety and the protection and preservation of life and property on the waters within the City of Norwich.

K9 Division: Norwich Police K-9’s are trained to perform a wide variety of tasks depending on the needs of the department and the profile of the community we serve. The City of Norwich K-9 Teams have expertise in tracking, drug detection, building searches, officer protection, and suspect apprehension.

Motor Unit:

The Norwich Police Department currently has two certified “Motor Officers” and one marked "Motor,” a 1999 Harley Davidson FLHTPI motorcycle. Motor Officers are involved in many different assignments which utilize the advantages that a motorcycle provides. Those may include: Traffic/Motor vehicle Law Enforcement, Dignitary Escort, Parades, Other special events.
