ABOUT
The Harwich Police Department is a full-service department staffed by one Chief, one Deputy Chief, two Lieutenants, four patrol Sergeants, one Detective Sergeant, 26 patrol officers, two detectives, five police dispatchers, two non-sworn administrative staff, an animal control officer and six special officers. The department offers a wide range of career development through on-going training opportunities and many specialty units including ATV, Bicycle Patrol, Elder Affairs, School Resource Officer, Traffic / Accident Reconstruction, Motorcycle, Search and Rescue, SWAT, and Veteran Outreach.
The Town of Harwich is located on Cape Cod and serves 13,400 full time residents. Due to its summer destination location, the summer population increases to approximately 39,000 residents. Harwich is comprised of seven Villages: North Harwich, East Harwich, South Harwich, West Harwich, Harwich Center, Harwich Port, and Pleasant Lake. Harwich encompasses 21 square miles of land area which includes 11 miles of shoreline, miles of rivers, four harbors, 22 freshwater ponds, and two reservoirs. Harwich is home to over 30 restaurants, art galleries, a thriving business district in Harwich Port, walking and bike trails, libraries, arts, culture, and music.
ATV
The All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Unit of the Harwich Police Department is tasked with detecting and deterring the operation of illegal off-road vehicles on public and private properties in and around the Town of Harwich, as well as to provide assistance during search and rescue operations. It also is used for patrolling beaches and wooded areas where a patrol cruiser may have difficulty gaining access. The all-terrain vehicles’ ability to travel in areas hard to reach by conventional vehicles will allow the officer to cut response time dramatically.
Motorcycle
The Harwich Police Motorcycle Unit began operations in 2008 and is supervised by Sgt. Paul Boorack. Officer Neil Nolan, Officer Keith Kannally, and Officer Griffiths are certified members of the unit. The department currently operates a Harley Davidson Electra Glide Police edition that is leased. When compared to the cost of an equipped cruiser the motorcycle costs significantly less. An additional savings is realized with the increased MPG’s attained by the motorcycle as compared to a cruiser.
Mountain Bike
The purpose of the Bicycle Patrol Unit is to perform visible patrol duties, community relations and crime prevention. The Bicycle Patrol places police officers in the community where they are the most available to the general public. Here they can work side by side with the people in our community to reduce crime, prevent loss of property, stop personal injury, and promote a positive image of our department to both adults and children alike.
School Resource Officer
The School Resource Officer is there for many reasons, most important of which is to be a resource to the students. The SROs work jointly and in partnership with educators to provide a full spectrum of police services to the school community both on and off campus, to students, teachers and parents. The unit has four primary areas of concentration.
Traffic
The Traffic Unit is a part of the Patrol Division. It is comprised of one Sergeant, and two officers who are assigned to traffic enforcement and crash investigations. Sergeant Paul Boorack is the current supervisor of the Traffic Unit.
