The Redding Police Department is looking to hire an Entry Level Police Officer. The Town of Redding is a small community of approximately 8,800. The town has been called the Vermont of Connecticut with approximately 25% of the town dedicated to open space. We are seeking ethical individuals who have a strong desire in going above and beyond in the care and protection of the citizens in the Town of Redding.

 

Job duties:

 -Under the supervision of a Sergeant, the duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

-Respond to routine and emergency calls of service.

-Arrest and take individuals into custody who violate local, state and federal laws and ordinances.

-Process, photograph and fingerprint and transport prisoners.

-Enforce driving laws through motor vehicle stops and issuing actions to violators such as infractions and warnings.

-Document and photograph traffic crashes and crime scenes.

-Conduct investigations on criminal acts that may lead to identification and arrest of suspects.

-Complete written reports to document incidents and activities.

-Provide CPR and first aid up to the level of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level of care.

-Operate a motor vehicle on patrol and to emergencies.

-Direct traffic.

-Conduct and participate in community events.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be a state of Connecticut resident, possesses a valid Connecticut motor vehicle license and be at least 21 years of age upon date of hire. A high school diploma or GED is required. To be considered an applicant must have taken the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) written exam and received a passing score of at least 70% as well as the CHIP Physical Ability Assessment and passed at the 40th percentile (preferred but can be completed after submission of application).

DISQUALIFIERS

-Any of the following will eliminate eligibility for employment with the Redding Police Department:

  • -Any Felony Convictions
  • -Any Conviction of a Class A or Class B Misdemeanor (under CT Law or in any other jurisdiction that if committed in this state, would constitute a Class A or B misdemeanor.)
  • -Conviction of any act which would constitute perjury or false statement
  • -Conviction for any domestic violence related misdemeanor crime.
  • -Applicant must not have been dismissed from any law enforcement unit for malfeasance or other serious misconduct.
  • -Applicant must not have resigned or retired from any law enforcement position while under investigation for any malfeasance or misconduct.

-The Redding Police Department will conduct an extensive background investigation on each applicant once a conditional offer of employment is given.   This will include examination of each candidate’s driving history, criminal record, employment history, financial history, and past/present illegal drug use.  Prior conduct in police/security/corrections fields along with basic honesty and integrity will be extensively examined.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Ability to successfully pass two oral interviews, an extensive background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical examination and drug test.

-Ability to attend and pass a 26-week academy that includes both academics and physical fitness testing.

-Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

-Ability to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions under stress.

-Ability to work irregular hours, including overnight, holidays and weekends.

-Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds.

-Ability to speak, read, and write in English.

-Ability to regulate emotions during stressful events.

-Ability to problem solve and improvise.

-Ability to possess and qualify with a firearm.

-Ability to maintain good physical fitness.

-Possess empathy for people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

 

Work Location and Hours:

Entry Level Police Officers will be sent to a Police Academy in the State of Connecticut for the first 26 weeks of their employment. The Police Academies are located throughout the state. Upon graduation from the Police Academy the Entry Level Police Officer will report to the Redding Police Department, located at 96 Hill Road Redding, Connecticut. The days worked are on a rotating schedule with 4 days working and 2 days off. The work day is 8 hours and the Entry Level Police Officer will be assigned to either a day, evening or midnight shift.
