Duties

  • Reads and applies department policies, rules, regulations, instructions, laws and ordinances, and general literature pertaining to policing.
  • Attends training in criminal investigation, firearms, defensive tactics, legal updates, community policing, first aid/CPR and other topics when assigned.
  • Inspects and maintains firearm, uniform, patrol car, and other assigned police equipment.
  • Officers may receive other specialized duty assignments including but not limited to: special investigation, K-9 handler, firearms instructor, field training officer, community police officer, tactical or special response team member, or assignment with regional task forces.

Performs other duties as required.

  • Minimum Training and Experience
  • Citizen of the United States:
  • Minimum Age of Eighteen (18);
  • Proof of High School graduation or a General Educational Development (GED) Certificate;
  • Possession of a Valid State of Michigan Driver's License;
  • Be currently licensed or meet all current Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)  requirements for licensing eligibility by June 1, 2017.

Other Necessary Requirements

Applicants for employment with the City of Grand Rapids as a Police Officer must successfully complete the selection process as outlined below. Candidates must qualify in each step of the process in order to proceed to the next step.

1. Meet all basic qualifications which include:
• Citizen of the United States
• Minimum Age of Eighteen (18)
• Proof of High School graduation or a General Educational Development (GED) Certificate
• Possession of a Valid State of Michigan Driver's License
• Be licensed or eligible for licensing by MCOLES as of June 1, 2017
• Meet all MCOLES Standards, including good moral character as defined by MCOLES standards, 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes and the absence of color blindness.

2. Complete the online application and attach it to the Police Officer job posting on the City of Grand Rapids website at www.grcity.us/humanresources and submit electronically to the Human Resources Department as directed via NEOGOV to be eligible for consideration.  THE FINAL GROUP OF APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED ONLINE BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE BY 11:59 PM ON February 23, 2017 TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.  

3. Must take and receive a passing score on the Grand Rapids Civil Service Exam for Police Officers.  The written exam is scheduled for:  Friday March 3, 2017.  THERE IS NO CHARGE/COST FOR THIS EXAM.

4. Applicants meeting the above pre-requisite qualifications and passing the written Civil Service examination must attend a Recruiting and Informational meeting which will be conducted the same day on Friday March 3, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Grand Rapids Police Department, 1 Monroe Center NW, Grand Rapids, MI.   There will only be one Recruiting and Informational meeting conducted in this recruit cycle.

5. Applicants attending the above meeting will receive instructions on how to complete the Background Questionnaire which MUST be thoroughly completed and returned to the Police Department Training Bureau by 5:00 pm on Monday March 13, 2017 The deadline for returning the background packet will be strictly adhered to. 

6. Pass Administrative Review of Background Questionnaire.

7. Pass the City of Grand Rapids oral board examination.

8. Pass the Personal History (Background) Investigation conducted by the City of Grand Rapids Police Department.*

9. Pass an evaluation of physical and mental health conducted by City-designated, qualified medical/psychological persons.*

OUT-OF-STATE CERTIFIED OFFICERS: Please contact the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) at (517)322-1417 to determine your eligibility and available dates for the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.  This program MUST be completed prior to June 1, 2017.
