The application deadline for this job is November 10, 2019 OR when the maximum number of applications (350) has been met.

Candidates should expect a highly competitive application process for new police officer positions in the Edison Police Department. Successful candidates will be ranked on a hiring list for two years. Those hired will be sent to the police academy by the Township.

There will be a comprehensive written exam, rigorous physical agility test, background investigation, medical and psychological testing. Candidates may be dropped at any point at the sole discretion of the police department. Testing will include minimum standards as well as competitive scoring. The written exam will be held in November 2019, but applicants should only apply if they are prepared to complete all phases of the process. Please read all instructions and details carefully.

No person shall be hired, or rehired, if that person has ever pled guilty or been convicted of an indictable offense in N.J or any other state; or received the benefit of pre-trial intervention, or an equivalent diversionary program, arising out of an indictable offense, in N.J. or any other state. No person shall be hired or rehired, if that person has pled guilty, been found guilty, or enrolled in any diversionary program arising from any disorderly or petty disorderly person’s offense if such an offense involves moral turpitude.  


DATE & TIME: The Entry Level Police Officer Written Exam will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

The Exam will be administered by the NJSACOP and will be their 2.5 hour exam.

The doors open at 9:00 AM for check-in/registration. The test is expected to begin at 10:00 AM.

LOCATION: The location for the exam will be Middlesex County College. The exam will be held in the Cafeteria in the College Center. 

All applicants must bring a photo I.D. at check-in to take the exam, along with pencils.

Phones, smart watches and any other electronic devices are strictly prohibited.


The physical agility test will follow the scoring of the written exam. Only those who have achieved a minimum score of 70% on the written exam will move on to the physical agility test. Applicants will be notified of their status through PoliceApp.com. Those moving on will receive notice of the physical agility test and required information.

Applicants should prepare for a rigorous physical agility test that may include running, sprinting, jumping and calisthenics. Be prepared to do pushups, situps, pullups, and burpees. Applicants must climb a 6' wall without assistance. Start training early to be prepared.

A note from a physician shall be submitted prior to the physical agility test, stating that the applicant is physically fit to participate in this vigorous physical agility test.

  • Be a citizen of the U.S. and a resident of N.J. by the date of appointment.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • Must be between 18-35 years old
  • Be able to read, write and speak the English language conversantly.
  • Shall posses a minimum of 60 credits from an accredited college or university. In lieu of the 60 college credit requirement, an applicant shall have completed 2 years of active military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
  • Be psychologically and physically fit to perform all the duties of a Police Officer.
  • Be physically capable of meeting the mandated firearms qualifications mandated by the N.J. Attorney General’s guidelines
  • Be physically fit and willing to fulfill all physical requirements of a police officer, and to complete a physical agility test that may include running, sprinting, calisthenics, climbing 6' wall or other activities as required.
  • Posses a valid N.J. drivers license by date of appointment.


  • Written Test- Applicants must receive a score of 70% or higher to be considered for the next phase of the process.
  • Physical Agility Exam graded upon a testing rubric established by the Chief of Police. There will be a minimum cut-off established.
  • Final score shall consist of 60% of the written test score and 40% of the physical agility score.
  • Applicants who are bonefide Edison residents on the date of the examination shall have 5 points added to their score.
  • Applicants that have served with the Edison Police Auxiliary for a period of at least four years prior to the commencement of the testing procedure shall have 5 points added to their score.
  • All eligible applicants shall undergo an oral interview by a review committee. Applicants who pass the oral interview may move onto the next phase.

Candidates who successfully pass the written and physical agility phases will be required to complete a comprehensive application prior to the background investigation. Additional paperwork will be required during the process, including waivers and warnings, and a physician's note which states that the applicant is fit for a physical agility test that may include running, sprinting, calisthenics, burpees, pushups, situps, jumping or other physical activity as determined by the police department which may relate to the duties of a police officer.


Edison Residents and Police Auxiliary receive additional points in the process according to Township Ordinance.


Edison Township Ordinance governs the hiring process and supersedes anything written herein.
