Minimum Requirements:

  • Have two years of post-secondary education.
  • Be at least 21 years of age at time of employment.
  • Possess a valid Maine driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Pass the Alert test with a qualifying score.
  • Complete or be qualified and willing to attend the Maine Criminal Justice Academy "Basic School" as prescribed by the State, unless officially waivered by the Academy.
  • Prior law enforcement experience a plus.
  • Physical fitness to perform the duties required of the position, including standing for extended periods and responding swiftly to incidents.
  • Periodically required to train and qualify in the use of firearms, vehicles and specialized law enforcement practices and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Help make a visible impact by proactively reducing opportunities for crime through targeted, preventative patrols in assigned areas. Officers play a key role in fostering a strong sense of safety, trust, and security throughout the community.
  • Respond promptly to calls for assistance, emergencies, and incidents requiring law enforcement intervention.
  • Engage with the community to foster positive relationships and provide support.
  • Identify criminal offenders, criminal activity, and where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
  • Prepare detailed reports on incidents, investigations, and daily activities.
  • Work alongside local, state, and regional law enforcement partners, building strong collaborative relationships to effectively serve and protect the community.
  • Maintain knowledge of local laws, ordinances, and departmental policies.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills in criminal investigation, leadership, and report writing.
  • Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

A CAREER WITH BUXTON PD:

Provide excellent service to the citizens of Buxton while enforcing Maine State criminal and civil law and conducting traffic enforcement within the town limits. Covering the town 24 hours a day, officers work with other officers on shift and often will have to respond to calls by themselves while awaiting backup. Your experience at Buxton PD will shape you into a well-rounded Officer taking ownership of your cases rather than triaging them to specialized units.

  • Starting July 1st, 2026
    • Entry Level – 1 Year – $32.69
    • 3 Years – 15 Years – $33.67 – $39.03
  • Personnel will be eligible to receive only one of the following and shall be compensated at the higher rate of the options outlined below:
    • Military Hourly Stipend:
      • 2 Years – $0.25 per hour
      • 4+ Years – $0.50 per hour
    • Education Hourly Stipend:
      • Associate’s – $0.25 per hour
      • Bachelor’s – $0.50 per hour
      • Master’s – $1.00 per hour
  • Special Training Incentive:
    • $1.00 per hour while operating or instructing a specialty

  • One week of vacation will be granted after first 6 months of employment.
  • Compensatory time may be accrued up to a maximum of 120 hours per fiscal year

    • Maine PERS retirement 2/3rds at 25 years (buy-back options for previous law enforcement service)
    • 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan (town to contribute 3% during probationary period and 6% after one year of service – employees are fully vested immediately)

Hiring Process:

Resume submission, interview, physical agility test, background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and medical exam.

**The Chief of Police holds discretion to waive portions of this process based on individual candidate's experience. **
