EMERGENCY DISPATCHER
Emergency Dispatchers are a critical link between the community and emergency services. Dispatching can be demanding work. Emergency services personnel depend greatly on Emergency Dispatchers to provide accurate information to help ensure their safety and that of the publics. The Emergency Dispatchers ability to obtain relevant and accurate information, simultaneously relay information to responding units, knowledge of the area, knowledge of available resources, and ability to use their best judgement utilize their knowledge and training, are extremely vital.

Job Description
The Town of Buxton is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Public Safety Dispatcher position. Both certified and non-certified candidates are encouraged to apply.
Dispatchers serve as the critical link between the public and emergency response services. In this role, you will be the calm, steady voice people rely on during emergencies—coordinating police, fire, and rescue responses with speed and accuracy.
This position involves operating advanced communication systems, managing both routine and emergency calls, and monitoring public safety radio traffic. It is a fast-paced environment that requires strong multitasking abilities, clear communication skills, and the ability to remain composed under pressure while exercising sound judgment and professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to obtain a Certified Terminal Operator’s Certificate and Emergency Telecommunicator Course (ETC) certification
- Availability to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to Commute to Buxton, ME 04093 (Required)

Responsibilites
- Report any deployment of officers beyond their regularly assigned routes or sectors, to the Officer-in-Charge.
- Inform the Officer-in-Charge whenever a police vehicle is out of service.
- Announce the call letters of the Department Communications Commission.
- Be thoroughly familiar with the department's procedures relating to use of radio and other communications equipment.
- Acquire a thorough knowledge of the location and layout of streets, buildings, parks, housing projects, and other significant areas of the community, to maximize the accuracy and speed of the dispatching services.
- Respond to all complaints received in a calm, civil manner.
- Be familiar with emergency procedures that relate to matters requiring urgent police attention, to be capable of activating them immediately.
- Keep personnel who have been dispatched to calls fully informed of all facts affecting the safety or efficiency of their response to such call.
- Inform the Officer-in-Charge when contact with an officer on patrol cannot be made after a reasonable amount of time.
- Maintain equipment, especially the emergency call lines, keep all equipment in working order and immediately report any malfunction or defect to the Head Dispatcher.
- Record all significant communications as required by current departmental procedures.
- Answer all telephone calls promptly as required by current departmental policy and respond by stating "Buxton Public Safety" or "Buxton Police Department".
Emergency Dispatchers are an integral part of the public safety team. They play a vital role in aiding people in trouble, stopping, preventing, and investigating crime, relaying pertinent information, guiding emergency services to scenes, and ensuring the safety of Buxton First Responders and the people they serve.

A CAREER WITH BUXTON EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
While remaining calm and professional, an Emergency Dispatcher must evaluate each call for service as rapidly as possible, obtain relevant information from citizens regardless of their state of mind, research premise history, check names for warrants, ensure emergency personnel safety, and simultaneously relay that information to units responding. Emergency Dispatchers must know department policies and procedures, the basic elements of crimes, local geography and available resources. With 24/7 coverage, Emergency Dispatchers work with our Patrol Officers and Firefighters during shifts. - Entry Level – 1 Year – $28.57
- 3 Years – 15 Years – $29.43 – $34.11
- Personnel will be eligible to receive only one of the following and shall be compensated at the higher rate of the options outlined below:
- Military Hourly Stipend:
- 2 Years – $0.25 per hour
- 4+ Years – $0.50 per hour
- Education Hourly Stipend:
- Associate’s – $0.25 per hour
- Bachelor’s – $0.50 per hour
- Master’s – $1.00 per hour

- $1.00 per hour while operating or instructing a specialty
