JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Crime Scene Technician performs various forensic and technical investigative tasks involving the identification, collection, preservation, packaging, and analysis of evidence at crime scenes. Additionally, this position recovers, compares, and identifies trace evidence and fingerprints.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- 1. Assists in the investigation of criminal offenses and death investigations, documents crime scenes utilizing photographs, videos, sketches, notes, and reports, and searches for trace or other physical evidence at crime scenes.
- 2. Collects, preserves, and identifies trace or other physical evidence found at crime scenes, processes collected evidence, and prepares comprehensive and technically correct reports.
- 3. Marks and documents evidence to maintain the chain of custody from the time of collection through submission to the evidence/property section, and maintains crime scene equipment and supplies
- 4. Testifies in court proceedings as an expert witness in qualified areas, conducts briefings and training as requested or required, and trains other communications personnel when required.
- 5. Maintains a collaborative professional relationship with crime scene investigators of neighboring police departments
- 6. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of the laws and regulations for the collection and preservation of evidence, as set forth in the Texas Rules of Evidence and the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.
- Knowledge of the chain of custody protocols and criminal court proceedings.
- Knowledge of proper safety procedures to be used at crime scenes.
- Knowledge of fingerprint collection and comparison methods.
- Knowledge of basic photography principles.
- Skill in communicating both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in preparing technical details reports.
- Advanced skill in attention to detail.
- Basic proficiency in operating computers and Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to work after-hours outside of the employee’s normal working hours.
- Ability to stand/walk on all types of surfaces, including paved or unpaved and uneven surfaces.
- Ability to work in all types of weather and conditions.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Criminal Justice or related fields is required. An equivalent combination of experience and/or education may be considered. Must have never been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above a class B misdemeanor or been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the final court order. Must have never been convicted, placed on deferred adjudication, or probation for any theft or assault family violence offense. Must be in compliance with drug use and tattoo policies of the Euless Police Department. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and/or acquire a Texas Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record as defined by city policy.
- This position requires frequent after-hours obligations and will require response outside of the employee’s normal working hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employees work in the office and the field and are exposed to cold and hot temperatures, road hazards, dust, toxic waste, chemical, mechanical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. May routinely lift objects as part of regular duties. Lifting does not normally require anything over shoulder height. Weights range between 10 and 40 pounds routinely.
Pre-employment screening includes, but is not limited to, Drug Screen, Physical Examination, Credit Check, Motor Vehicle Review, and applicable Background Checks.
