Job Announcement:
Summary: Under the supervision and direction of the Department Head, the Lieutenant supervises sergeants, officers, and support personnel to ensure the safety and security of airport passengers, employees, and infrastructure. Provides Department Head with daily reports and information as requested.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned; the essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
• At the direction of the Department Head, assists in the management of day-to-day police operations, including patrol, investigations, traffic control, and response to emergencies.
• Makes arrests in accordance with provisions of the law.
• Establishes a friendly and approachable presence while exercising soft policing techniques when possible.
• Ensures compliance with federal aviation regulations (FAR), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements, and local, state, and federal laws.
• Coordinates and directs responses to critical incidents, security breaches, and other emergencies within the airport property.
• Prepares and reviews schedules, activity logs, reports, and statistical summaries.
• Supervises and participates in the work of an assigned group of subordinates engaged in the enforcement of laws and regulations and in the protection of life and property.
• Supervises and participates in the prevention of hijacking of aircraft by the monitoring of passenger behavior and detection devices and the searching of individuals.
• Supervises and participates in crowd and traffic control.
• Assists in the training and development of RIAC Police Officers as directed by the Department
Head.
• Perform law enforcement patrol duties. When not performing assigned administrative work, the Lieutenant must perform patrol duties.
• Cooperates with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies as directed and in conjunction with legal counsel Provides needed first-aid in the case of injuries or accidents.
• Carries firearms and other weapons in the course of and in the performance of required duties.
• Arrests without a warrant any person(s) found violating laws or regulations on airport property.
• Prepares detailed reports of activities as required.
• Makes frequent inspections of the airport to ensure that proper security is being maintained.
• Performs a consent search of individuals who fail to clear the metal detection devices during boarding.
• Operates radios in the performance of required duties.
• Deals with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
• Other related duties as assigned.

• The ability to supervise and train police personnel engaged in maintaining law and order and in protecting persons and property.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Special qualifications include:
• A working knowledge and skill in the use of firearms as evidenced by the ability to qualify with the weapons used in airport police work.
• The ability to operate radios.
• Proficient with Microsoft office suite.
• Ability to make decisions under a variety of circumstances.
• A working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately to a variety of individuals and in a variety of settings.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
Education/Experience:
• Must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, and United States Citizenship.
• Certification as a RI Police Officer from the RI Police Officer Standards & Training (RI POST).
• Employment as a full-time police officer with the Rhode Airport Corporation Police Department for three (3) years including probationary status or equivalent supervisory experience with another police department.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
• Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License issued by the State of Rhode Island and be insurable as a condition of continued employment.
• Must meet the required State of Rhode Island's qualifications to carry weapons used in the performance of duty.
• Must pass a required background check for security credentials which must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
• Prolonged walking and standing.
• Must maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to respond quickly to emergencies, conduct foot and vehicle patrols, and engage in potentially strenuous physical activity.

Starting salary is $99,109 with increases up to top set at $109,374 as of June 30, 2026.
