The Town of Abington is seeking experienced police officers for lateral transfer opportunities. The department is community policing-oriented and committed to dedication and professionalism. The department consists of 17 dedicated full-time Police Officers, 2 School Resource Officers, 1 Detective, 6 Patrol Sergeants, 1 Administrative Sergeant, 1 Detective Sergeant, 2 Lieutenants, a Deputy Chief, and a Chief — all working together in a team-oriented environment with many growing opportunities. Compensation and Benefits
The base salary range is $67,912.00 (Step 1) to $75,379.20 (Step 7) per the most recent collective bargaining agreement, with additional benefits and incentives, including:
Educational incentive added to base pay based on degree level:

- 10% for an Associate’s Degree
- 20% for a Bachelor’s Degree
- 25% for a Master’s Degree
- Longevity pay beginning after five years of law enforcement experience
- Three weeks of vacation beginning in year eight
- Thirteen paid holidays
- Personal days and health incentive days
- On-duty workout time
- 9%-night shift differential for regularly worked evening and overnight shifts
- Certified Field Training Officers (FTOs) receive an additional 10% while performing FTO duties.
Detail pay is currently:
- $67.00 per hour daytime rate with a 4-hour minimum
- $100.50 per hour nights and weekends

- Qualified lateral candidates may be eligible for placement at a higher salary step based on years of service.
Opportunities
The Abington Police Department offers a variety of specialized assignments, including, but not limited to:
- Detectives
- School Resource Officers
- K9-Unit
- Mountain Bike Unit
- Motorcycle Unit
- Drone Unit
- UTV Unit
These assignments provide officers with opportunities to grow in diverse areas of law enforcement.
Additionally, as part of Metro-LEC, when applicable, officers may participate in a variety of regional task forces, including SWAT and Cybercrime Units, enhancing collaboration across agencies. Any applicant who is currently an active member in good standing with a Metro-LEC team shall maintain their status upon appointment.
Eligibility
- Applicants must have successfully completed an MPTC-certified full-time police academy.
- Hold active certification from the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission.
- Must reside in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts within 20 miles of the Town of Abington perimeter within first year of employment.
Applicants must also:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- A valid Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms
- A valid Driver’s License
- Have no felony convictions
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
Additionally, applicants must:
- Successfully pass a psychological evaluation
- Undergo a comprehensive background investigation
- Have no serious disciplinary issues within the past five years
