About Abington:
Abington, Massachusetts, has a rich history, deeply intertwined with the land and the early American settlement. Situated halfway between Boston and Plymouth, Abington was part of the Bridgewater Purchase, a large tract of land acquired from Massasoit, the chief of the Wampanoag Federation, in 1650. The area was known to the Algonquins as Mana-mo-oske-agin, which translates to "great green place of shaking greens," highlighting its lush meadows and streams. This connection to the land's natural beauty remains a notable aspect of Abington's identity. The name “Abington” was given in 1706 by Governor Joseph Dudley, and the town was officially incorporated in 1712.
With a population of just over 17,000, Abington has grown and developed while maintaining its historical charm. The town celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2012, reflecting on its rich legacy and connection to the land and industries that shaped its identity. Abington’s blend of history, local industry, and natural beauty makes it a town with a unique story.
