Casting the Digital Footprint
This two-day classroom training explores the digital evidence that individuals create across various electronic devices during investigation scenarios. Participants will gain insight into the traces—both intentional and unintentional—that technology users leave behind and learn strategies for leveraging this information to enhance investigations. The course covers techniques for identifying, collecting, and analyzing digital evidence from multiple sources using open-source data and provider cooperation.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the mechanisms by which individuals create a digital trail across multiple devices that investigators can use
- Interpret reports derived from device analysis
- Employ methods for extracting device histories relevant to investigations
- Utilize techniques to obtain search warrants from open-source platforms and social media providers

Who Should Attend
This training is designed for law enforcement professionals, prosecutors, court system personnel, and related criminal justice officials. Access is restricted to criminal justice professionals only.
What's Included
The registration fee covers 16 hours of instruction, course materials, and instructional costs. Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for meals, travel, and accommodations.
Instructor
Scott Kilpatrick - NCJTC Associate and Detective with the Baltimore County Police Department's Crimes Against Children Unit. Kilpatrick brings extensive investigative experience and serves as a consultant for sexual assault forensic examination and domestic violence programs. As a nationally certified instructor, he specializes in trauma-informed approaches and victim-centered responses to sensitive investigations.
