Casting the Digital Footprint
This two-day training program examines the digital evidence that individuals leave behind when using electronic devices, whether knowingly or unknowingly. The course explores how investigators can leverage technology-based information gathering to strengthen their investigative efforts by collecting personal, public, and open-source data.
Course Overview
Modern investigations are increasingly shaped by technology. This training teaches criminal justice professionals techniques for uncovering digital evidence and locating investigative leads through various technological methods applicable across multiple investigation types.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand how individuals create digital "trails" across multiple electronic devices that investigators can identify and analyze
- Interpret and evaluate reports generated from analyzed devices
- Extract and apply device histories for investigative purposes
- Identify strategies for obtaining search warrants targeting open-source information and social media service providers

Intended Audience
This training is restricted to law enforcement professionals, prosecutors, and court system personnel.
What's Included
The registration fee covers 16 hours of instruction, program materials, and instructional expenses. Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own meals, transportation, and accommodations.
Instructor
Scott Kilpatrick, NCJTC Associate and Detective with the Baltimore County Police Department's Crimes Against Children Unit, brings extensive investigative experience to this course. A nationally certified instructor, Kilpatrick partners with healthcare organizations to enhance victim-centered responses and trauma-informed practices in sensitive investigations.
