Energy Methods and Damage Analysis in Traffic Crash Reconstruction by IPTM
Energy Methods and Damage Analysis in Traffic Crash Reconstruction
This comprehensive 40-hour course, offered by the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), is designed to help traffic crash reconstructionists master energy-based analysis techniques that are often perceived as complex or daunting. By breaking down fundamental concepts and progressing through increasingly sophisticated applications, participants will develop confidence and competence in applying energy methods to crash investigations.
Throughout the course, attendees will examine traffic collisions through an energy-focused lens, beginning with foundational principles and advancing to sophisticated analytical methods. Key topics include understanding and applying Equivalent Barrier Speed (EBS) and delta-V calculations, analyzing collisions using damage momentum approaches, and exploring scenarios where traditional conservation of linear momentum may not be the optimal analytical tool. Participants will also study crush analysis and the three primary energy equations that depend on crush measurements, supported by hands-on outdoor activities where students measure actual crash vehicles and calculate resulting damage energy and speeds.
Course Content Covers:
- Standards, measurements, and dimensional analysis
- Conversion factors and their applications
- Vector mathematics and analysis
- Damage momentum and crush analysis techniques
- Crush measuring protocols and field measurement methods
- Outdoor practical projects involving damage interpretation and crush measurement
- Energy fundamentals and analytical approaches
