Overview

De-escalation has become vital to contemporary law enforcement practices. Although many officers have participated in recognized training programs such as ABLE (Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement) and ICAT (Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics), they frequently struggle with implementation in actual field situations. This course addresses that gap by moving beyond foundational concepts to equip officers with immediately applicable, practical skills for real-world encounters.

Designed for patrol officers, supervisors, and trainers, this program provides realistic, actionable techniques for managing challenging situations while prioritizing officer safety and lawful authority. Rather than replacing existing programs, it enhances those foundations by integrating de-escalation principles into the complexities of actual police work.

Course Focus

Participants will explore the interconnection between tactical positioning, communication, time management, distance, cover availability, accessible resources, and force continuum options. The course emphasizes that successful de-escalation involves tactical decision-making aimed at minimizing risk while preserving the capacity to adjust when conditions shift.

Using authentic body-worn camera footage, surveillance recordings, dash camera video, and documented critical incident analyses, students will study both effective and ineffective police responses to identify practical methods for improving outcomes. Interactive exercises and scenario-based problem-solving develop competency in decision-making that protects officers, individuals being encountered, and the public.
